NDIS continence assessments for complex care adults

Individuals with an acquired brain injury, spinal cord injuries, or neurological conditions may have more medically complex care needs, resulting in additional levels of support, such as complex bowel care. Our continence assessment and management services are here to give you peace of mind. You can trust that our team has the expertise and experience to support you.

At Home Care is a trusted provider of specialist care for individuals with complex, high-care needs, including continence services, overnight support, ventilator care, and 24/7 assistance.

NDIS continence support for children

Children and teens with disabilities and complex care requirements may require daily toileting assistance. Typically, you, your family, or caregivers will be responsible for meeting your child’s toileting needs.

At Home Care can provide additional clinical nursing support for your child through continence assessments, private training of family and caregivers, and further support to meet NDIS requirements.

If you have questions about our support and training options, contact our team, and we’ll help you.

Frequently asked questions: Continence

Responses provided by a Clinical Nurse and Continence Advisor

A continence assessment is a thorough evaluation designed to address and manage urinary or bowel issues. It involves reviewing your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle to develop a personalised plan for improving your comfort and health. This assessment helps identify the best strategies or treatments to enhance your quality of life.

Our clinical nurse will visit you and offer expertise in preparing your continence plan, defining the products you need, and reviewing the plan. At the end of the continence assessment, you’ll have a better understanding of:

  • Improved management techniques
  • A continence management plan tailored to your needs and goals
  • Recommendation for continence products and equipment you need

Someone might need a continence assessment if they are experiencing issues with urinary or bowel control, such as frequent urges, incontinence, or difficulty managing these functions, or to assist with providing justification to funding providers for the use of continence products. The assessment helps identify the underlying causes of these issues and develops a tailored approach to improve management and quality of life.

Under the NDIS, continence assessments can be crucial for individuals with disabilities who experience continence issues. The NDIS may fund these assessments as part of a broader plan to support participants’ needs, ensuring they receive appropriate care, products, and services to manage their continence effectively.

Is it just a discussion, or is there also a physical examination? A continence assessment typically involves both a discussion and a physical examination.

The discussion covers medical history, symptoms, and lifestyle factors.

At the same time, the physical examination (non-invasive) may include abdominal palpation (feeling the belly), auscultation (listening) of the bowel using a stethoscope, skin assessment, and urinalysis (dipstick of urine). For added comfort, the client may find it beneficial to lie in bed during this portion of the assessment.

The other main services include the following:

Continence Report: A detailed document summarising the findings from the continence assessment, including identified issues, recommendations, and any necessary follow-up actions.

Continence Management Plan: A personalised plan developed based on the assessment results, outlining strategies, treatments, and support required to manage and improve continence issues effectively.

Product Assistance only. This may include product advice, ordering of samples and evaluation of effectiveness.

Nurses providing continence services typically need relevant qualifications, such as a postgraduate certificate in continence nursing or stomal therapy nursing.

Yes, the services provided for continence assessments and management are also applicable to incontinence. Incontinence is a type of continence issue, so the assessment, management plans, and related services are designed to address and improve incontinence specifically.
